Various degra­da­tion processes are taking place simul­ta­ne­ously in a battery cell, each with individual timescales and physico-chemical triggers. For this reason, battery aging is not an inter- or extrap­ola­tive problem and thus far unsolved in the commu­nity.
The charac­ter­i­za­tion of losses along­side different trajec­to­ries of aging enables to eluci­date how the cells age and why. Lithium plating is the showstopper for fast charging, causing rapid cell aging and safety risks. Since exper­i­mental plating detec­tion is challenging, it often comes down to tedious cycling tests. The solution is getting access to the anode surface poten­tial inside the cell under all opera­tion conditions, which is the triggering quantity for lithium plating. LFP cells are true drivers of innova­tion and are already today very hot candi­dates for stationary energy storage, rail applications and automo­tive. Compared to conven­tional NMC/NCA cathode materials, LFP cells also have an improved environ­mental balance due to the absence of the critical materials nickel and cobalt, and their extended lifespan reduces waste.
